| ARTIST STATEMENT
Capturing the light is what I strive for every time I head into the field, for it is the light that transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. As the world turns, light brings our attention to the infinite details and nuances found in the environment around us. A storm breaking over the mountains at sunset; a forest shrouded in fog; first light illuminating the red rocks of the desert, these elusive moments speak to me, bringing life to an otherwise static image.
I choose to capture these moments using a large format view camera and traditional film. For landscape photography, the view camera more closely duplicates the way we interpret the world around us, while capturing unbelievable detail. When I compose a new photograph I attempt to arrange the composition in a way that tells a story. Though I often approach a place with a pre-conceived vision, my best images are often the result of pure, timeless and intuitive interpretation of my subject and the light. Every image I print is the result of this passionate pursuit full of emotion, and rich with enlightenment. At its core, I strive to record fleeting moments of change that fill our world with mystery and wonder.
BIOGRAPHY
John Richter has studied the arts since he was a child. First engaging in drawing and painting, John developed an acute awareness of form, texture, and space. He had a natural eye for composition and was further influenced by studying great renaissance, impressionist, and modern painters.
It was in his senior year of high school that he was introduced to photography as an art form. John’s creative drive was completely reignited by this newly discovered art form that stimulated him creatively while challenging him intellectually. John began studying diligently, spending countless hours experimenting in the school’s darkroom after hours.
Realizing his calling John bought his first 35mm camera and moved to Telluride, Colorado shortly after high school graduation. John quickly fell in love with the striking beauty of the Rocky Mountains and the Desert Southwest. He has called Telluride his home for the past 15 years. Determined to make a difference, John began working with local environmental groups in 1998. He has donated dozens of photographs to various environmental causes over the past decade. John’s work was featured in Telluride’s prolific Valley Floor struggle, and published by many notable environmental organizations including: Conservation Alliance; The Valley Floor Preservation Partners; The Trust for Public Land; The Western Colorado Congress; Sheep Mountain Alliance, and The San Miguel Conservation Foundation.
John’s photographs have been published regularly in Patagonia catalogs since 2002. He has forged a relationship with Patagonia because of their unmatched business ethics, environmental stewardship, and superior products. Patagonia has long been coveted exposure among landscape and adventure photographers placing John among the top in his field.
Apart from a brief introductory course in high school, John Richter is a self-taught master of landscape photography. He has studied dozens of extensive books coupled with over 15 years of field experience. John shoots both 35mm and Large Format equipment often using a spot meter to determine exposure. John spends weeks at a time in the field fully immersing himself in the creative process. He strives to capture images that evoke deep emotion and personal reflection.
Using heavy large format equipment requires extreme patience and a strong back. With his day-pack weighing close to 50 pounds, John hikes to many locations. In more remote locations John backpacks several days to find fresh and exciting new imagery. While exploring slot canyons, John uses technical gear and ropes to descend these convoluted, narrow chasms of the Southwest. His passion to create fine photographs is equally matched by his thirst for adventure and a natural athletic ability.
Since the Spring of 2007 John has been exhibiting his work at juried art shows across the country. He has received several awards and merits including "Best of Photography" Tempe Festival of the Arts as well as being chosen as the featured artist Vail Arts Festival 2008. His work appears in many corporate and private collections around the globe. In 2008, John was commissioned to install a four by ten foot floating piece for Urban Villages. This is the center-piece for very contemporary new luxury residential development in the heart Denver's Historic Lower Downtown.
