JOHN RICHTER uses two very different camera systems along with a variety of top quality lenses, filters, and films to capture these wonderful images over the past ten years.
CAMERAS AND LENSES
LARGE FORMAT
Toyo 45A View Camera
The view camera has remained relatively unchanged for the last 100 years, however, with new lens technology and today's film, the view camera remains to be the landscape photographer's primary tool.
LENSES
I use four different focal lenths in the field. 75mm Schneider super angulon- Ultra-wide angle 135mm Nikkor- Moderate wide angle 210mm Nikkor- Normal angle of view 300mm Nikkor- Moderate tele-photo
35mm SYSTEM
Nikon N80 Camera body The lightweight, pro features, and built in speedlight (flash) make this camera the perfect choice for me. I enjoy all the modern technology such as three types of light meters, auto focus, etc., without the bulk and weight of a full size pro body. The built in flash is indispensible when capturing the moment as it happens.
35mm LENSES
Nikon 18-35mm wide-angle zoom Nikon 20mm 2.8D Nikon 24-85mm zoom Nikon 70-300mm Zoom
FILTERS
I carry a limited spectrum of filters used only to most accurately render my own visual expirience with the scene. I do not use color bias filters or special effect filters in any way to enhance an image. Warming filtration is used for color correction due to long exposures and/or photographing in open shade. HOYA 81A- Color correction/ slight warming POLARIZER- Reduces glare/ increases contrast SINGH-RAY Split Graduated Neutral Density Filters These filters come in a variety of densities and graduations. I use them to balance light between foreground and background mostly in the early morning and late evening hours. I primarily use the 2-stop soft step; 2-stop hard step; and the 3-stop hard step. FILM
All of my images are shot on one of five color films. For almost all shooting situations I use Fuji Velvia 100. For the redrock canyons of the Colorado Plateau, I prefer to shoot Kodak E100VS. This film is exceptionally good in wet canyons or in any situation where reds and blues are the dominate colors. I also shoot Velvia 50, and Provia 100F depending on conditions. Finally, for shooting action in low-light situations such as slot canyons, dark forest, etc. I use Fuji Provia 400F. This high speed film retains a relatively tight grain for its high speed.
TRIPOD
I use a Gitzo Mountaineer carbon fiber tripod with a Gitzo Magnesium Ball-head.
